Annapurna Region · Trek Guide
A shorter, gentler alternative to EBC with some of the best mountain amphitheater views in Nepal. Here's what it actually costs, how the days break down, and whether it's the right fit for you.
| Package type | Typical cost (USD) | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Budget teahouse trek | $750–$900 | Guide + porter, meals, basic teahouse lodging |
| Standard guided trek | $950–$1,200 | Small group, better teahouses, all meals |
| Comfort / private | $1,400–$1,800 | Private guide and porter, comfort-tier lodges |
Not usually included: international flights and Nepal visa, travel insurance, tips (budget $100–$150), and personal gear. ABC's lower altitude means no acclimatization-day costs the way EBC requires — a meaningful part of why it's cheaper overall.
| Day | Route | Altitude |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kathmandu/Pokhara → Nayapul → Tikhedhunga | 1,540m |
| 2 | Tikhedhunga → Ghorepani | 2,860m |
| 3 | Ghorepani (Poon Hill sunrise) → Tadapani | 2,630m |
| 4 | Tadapani → Chhomrong → Bamboo | 2,310m |
| 5 | Bamboo → Deurali → Annapurna Base Camp | 4,130m |
| 6 | ABC → Bamboo (descend) | 2,310m |
| 7 | Bamboo → Nayapul → Pokhara | — |
A 10-day version adds a rest day and spreads the ascent more gradually — worth it if you're not confident about rapid altitude gain, even though 4,130m is moderate by Himalayan standards.
Sep–Nov (autumn) and Mar–May (spring) are both strong choices here, arguably more interchangeable than for EBC — spring brings rhododendron blooms along the trail, autumn brings the clearest mountain views. Winter (Dec–Feb) is viable since ABC's lower altitude means less extreme cold, though some teahouses reduce services. Monsoon (Jun–Aug) brings leeches and limited visibility at lower elevations.
ABC is graded moderate — less demanding than EBC both in duration and altitude. Most moderately fit trekkers with some hiking experience can complete it comfortably at a sensible pace. The main physical challenge is the steep stone staircases around Chhomrong, not altitude.
Compared to EBC: ABC tops out at 4,130m versus EBC's 5,364m — low enough that altitude sickness risk is meaningfully lower, though not zero. It's a good first Himalayan trek if you're unsure how your body handles elevation before committing to something longer.
